Before the advent of interactive whiteboard, dry-erase whiteboards were widely used. It has a white colored glossy surface which doesn't allow permanent markings. Before whiteboards, the chalkboards were commonly used. They are still used in many asian and african countries. Whiteboards become increasing popular by mid 1990s and can be easily found in offices' meeting rooms, schools and colleges' classroom.

Just like chalks are used on chalkboards, an eraser marker is used on a whiteboard. This eraser marker contains removable ink and thats why it is also known as the non-permanent marker. A whiteboard can be made up of polyester coated steel, porcelain enameled steel or melamine resin. Steel whiteboards can be used to affix notes on them as they are magnetic. However they are less durable then porcelain boards.Since the ink of the dry markers can't enter into the pores of the porcelain whiteboards, therfore there color don't fade over a period of time.
